Editing Picture & Sound II

Objective: To familiarize students with the workflow between audio and video editing software applications.
Assessment:  Your individual grade will be averaged with other project scores.
Submit: an Audition session as specified to your assigned folder on the anim-stor1 server.

Select your Premiere project’s most current sequence.  From the edit pull-down menu, select “Edit in Adobe Audition.”  Choose “Sequence.”  A dialog window will open.  Keep your Premiere sequence name as the name for the Audition session.  Adobe should create a path to a new “Adobe Audition Interchange” folder on the server.  The entire sequence should be selected.  The video will be coming to Audition through a Dynamic Link.  The “Transfer” settings are your way of telling Audition to import any audio effects or editing from Premiere.  Check “Pan and Volume Information.”  Check “Open in Adobe Audition.”  Audition opens a Multi-Track Session.

  • Convert all clips to unique copy.
  • Lock film and dialogue clips in time.
  • Select all dialogue clips.  Use Essential Sound to apply the “Balanced Male Voice” preset.
  • Stretch drone1 to fill the entire timeline from opening shot to the final fade of credits.  Use the “properties” window to disable pitch shift (0 semitones).
  • Stretch baby sound with a negative pitch shift.  Reverse the baby’s crying in the (destructive) waveform mode.
  • Overlay monster growls.
  • Use the “loop play” to layer effects adding each one to the cumulative whole.  Set the level of each effect using fades, keyframes, and track levels.  Be aware of which controls affect clips and which affect the entire track.
  • Remember, volume is cumulative.  Even if the dialogue doesn’t peak by itself, the combined level of several tracks might climb into the red.
  • Save your .sesx in the Adobe Audition Interchange folder.
  • Export the session to Adobe Premiere Pro.  Choose the “export each bus as stem” and “open in Adobe Premiere Pro” options.

Copy the imported stem mixes to a new copy of the Premiere Pro edited sequence.  Remove all other audio clips and delete any empty audio tracks.

Whew.
