performance
The DIRECTOR should…
ANALYZE the script. Understand character motives for each scene.
CAST relationships, not roles. Secure signed PERSONAL RELEASES before shooting.
REHEARSE. Memorizing lines, gestures, and pauses improves continuity shooting.
CO-CREATE, don’t dictate. Actors have ideas, too. Encourage experimentation and improvisation in rehearsal. Once the cameras roll, however, emphasize CONSISTENCY.
COACH actors to pronounce words clearly and repeat actions consistently. Encourage them to…
speak LOUD. Before performing, count to ten. Make “one” your softest whisper; make “ten” your loudest shout.
speak LOW. Before performing, say the word “low” ten times. Each time, try to make your voice lower than the time before.
speak SLOWLY (140 words per minute or less). Relax before starting; breathe during performance. Don’t recite lines; listen and respond to other actors
ARTICULATE intentionally. Rehearse holding a pencil between your teeth to sharpen consonants.
EMPHASIZE pronouns.
Record one or two CLEAN TAKES takes of overlapping dialogue. They can be combined in post-production.
