Phase One: Pre-Production
Objective: The intent of this assignment is to plan your project shoot for logistical efficiency and storytelling impact.
Assessment: Your grade will be averaged with other final exam scores.
Incorporating what you have learned this term, your group’s scriptwriter will prepare a new treatment and script based on a previous (recommended) or original project. Your director will analyze the script, identifying the emotional peak or climax of the script, articulating it in the film’s storyboard as some significant visual change (examples might include: a camera move, an editing pace variation, or a rack focus). The storyboard – polished with your professor in multiple drafts before the due date – must be signed by your professor before your group proceeds to Phase Two.
Phase Two: Production
Objective: Governed by this project workflow, the plan of the storyboard is committed to recordings of video and audio.
Assessment: Successful completion of this assignment requires raw (not edited) footage and its corresponding documentation. Your grade will be averaged with other final exam scores.
On behalf of your group, your producer will submit to D2L a single .pdf binder which includes the following in this order
- Storyboard – completed by your director
- Personal Releases – secured by your director
- Location Releases – secured by your producer
- Lighting Plots – prepared by your gaffer
- Footage Log – prepared by your camera operator and audio recordist, the log should reflect f-stop bracketing and a shooting ratio of not less than 6:1 (probably higher in shots which depict the film’s climax).
- Essay – completed by your director. One page maximum, accounting for any differences between your storyboard and your actual footage.
On behalf of your group, your producer will submit a second copy of the binder to your server partition using the following file path:

On behalf of your group, your editor will submit all the video footage to your server partition using the following file path:

On behalf of your group, your audio recordist will upload all the audio recordings to your server partition using the following file path:

Phase Three: Post-Production
Objective: Video and audio recordings are combined in an edited sequence.
Assessment: Governed by this project workflow, your editor will prepare an assembly edit and rough cut for review during class. Your grade will be averaged with other final exam scores.
Phase Four: Distribution
Objective: An approved final edit is exported for exhibition in various venues, including Vimeo and submission to the university’s bi-annual film festival.
Assessment: This culminating project grade will be averaged with other final exam scores.
Export a final version of the film using Adobe Media Encoder in the H.264 format, with a preset of “Match Source – High bitrate.” The name of your film should be the name of the most recent sequence. Submit one copy to D2L’s “Post” assignment folder. Store a second copy on the server in the subfolder at this file path
