Phase One: Pre-production
Objective: The intent of this assignment is to plan your project shoot for logistical efficiency and storytelling impact.
Assessment: Your grade will be averaged with other group assignment scores.
On behalf of your group, your director will analyze an assigned conversation, identifying the emotional peak or climax of the script. S/he will augment the provided dialogue with characters, circumstance, and action, in the storyboard for a short film. The storyboard – polished with your professor in multiple drafts before the due date – must be signed by your professor before your group proceeds to Phase Two.
Phase Two: Production
Objective: Perhaps as much or more than any other single feature, dual-system recording distinguishes amateur from professional video. Student teams will practice dual-system recording resulting in footage used for successive instruction in post-production. Among other criteria, this assignment’s grading rubric privileges a low noise floor achieved by intimate microphone placement and adequate volume that avoids distortion.
Assessment: Unlike the semester’s previous projects, successful completion of this assignment requires raw (not edited) footage and its corresponding documentation. Your grade will be averaged with other project scores.
On behalf of your group, your producer will submit to D2L a single .pdf binder which includes the following in this order

- Personal Releases – secured by your director

- Lighting Plots – prepared by your gaffer
- Footage Log – prepared by your camera operator and audio recordist
- Essay – completed by your director. One page maximum, accounting for any differences between your storyboard and your actual footage.
