J & L-cuts

Duplicate your ASSEMBLY timeline. Rename it with the proper sequence nomenclature as shown::

Use RIPPLE and ROLLING edit tools to trim clips with single-frame accuracy.  (If you’re used to other, less efficient workflows which rely primarily on the razor and selection tools, embrace this opportunity to learn and practice this more professional technique.)

UNLINK clips so video and audio tracks may be edited separately to create J- and L-CUTS, with these questions in mind:

  • How can this cut create viewer interest in the next shot?
  • Does the audience most need to see the person speaking, or the person listening?

ORGANIZE, LABEL & CHECKERBOARD (or “split”) timeline audio tracks.  This is especially important if characters speak at the same time or interrupt each other.
