Foley

The post-production workflow is cumulative.  A single missed deadline tends to delay successive assignments.

Objective: Foley editors will create, organize, edit, and mix, an effects stem to enhance the film’s soundtrack.  The goal is a Premiere Pro sequence with one combined track of effects that runs the entire length of the film.
Submit: (1) An Adobe Premiere Pro Foley project with numbered sequences; (2) an Audition multi-track session; (3) original recording files.
Assessment:  The individual grade will be averaged with other quiz & assignment scores.

  • From Dialogue to Foley – Navigating Productions
    • Open Adobe Premiere Pro.  Create a “Foley” project within your group’s Production.
    • Copy the most recent sequence from your group’s Dialogue project into the Foley project.  Rename the copied sequence as appropriate.
    • Export a low-rez window burn for field reference on your phone.
  • Spotting & Recording
    • Spot your film, making a list of necessary atmospheres and sound effects as well as their corresponding timecodes.
    • Upload a copy of the completed effects spotting sheet(s) to the server in your group’s Documentation folder.  Consult with your professor about effects that might be difficult or dangerous to record.
    • Record the necessary effects with an intimate microphone distance for low noise.  If you’re recording outside, use a wind kit.  Robust waveforms with bit depth of 24 and sample rate of 48kHz are expected.
    • Upload the recorded effects to the appropriate server folder.  Backup the files in at least two other locations.
  • Multi-Track Session
    • Export the most recent Foley sequence from Adobe Premiere Pro to Adobe Audition.
    • Add the effects to an Audition multi-track session (.sesx).  Each effect should have a labeled track of its own.  Route tracks to busses (called “submix channels” in Premiere Pro).  Route busses to a mix channel.
    • Adjust levels as appropriate.  Include microfades at the beginning and end of clips to minimize abrupt cuts to silence.
    • Adjust dynamics and EQ as appropriate.
    • Mix effects to a cumulative average loudness of -12dBFS/-23LUFS
    • Export the Audition work back to Adobe Premiere as a single track.
